Scrapbook 67 : Rutland & Burlington Railroad, ca. 1843-1900.

Tickets, schedules, receipts, regulations, stock certificates, correspondence, and other memorabilia (1843-1900). The Champlain and Connecticut River Railroad was chartered in 1843 and in 1847 the name was changed to the Rutland and Burlington Railroad. The first locomotive ran into Middlebury Sept. 1, 1849 and the first train of passenger cars, Sept. 19, 1847. In 1870 the road was leased to the Central Road for 20 years and in 1890 to the Central Vermont for 999 years.

After his disastrous investment in the marble industry in the 1850s, Henry Sheldon invested instead in real estate. In Middlebury, he bought buildings in the village that he repaired and rented out.
